Squier, Ephraim George (17 June 1821–17 April 1888), journalist and archaeologist, was born at Bethlehem, New York, the son of Joel Squier, a Methodist circuit rider, and Catherine Kilmer, who died when he was twelve. Because of his itinerant father’s modest means, Ephraim had little formal education. He attended the Troy Conference Academy in West Poutney, Vermont, from 1836 to 1839....
