This chapter describes indications for bariatric surgery (i.e. in terms of body mass index or body mass index, etc.) followed by a detailed discussion on the metabolic syndrome and the role of bariatric surgery in the management of diabetes mellitus (i.e. with the latest evidence about surgery versus best medical therapy for diabetes). The general considerations of surgery and multidisciplinary team input are emphasized, together with risk management strategies in obese surgical patients (and specific preoperative considerations). Bariatric anaesthetic considerations (SOBA guidelines) are then discussed, followed by the various bariatric surgical procedures (open versus laparoscopic techniques) and their compared outcomes. The operative steps to the various bariatric surgical procedures are described in detail. The nutritional and dietetic considerations of bariatric surgery are then discussed, together with the principles of revision bariatric surgery.
