The two preventer backstays, led from the mast to each quarter of a sailing yacht to support the mast and maintain tension in the forestay. Whenever tacking or gybing the lee runner is eased or cast off to allow the boom to swing over without restriction, the new weather runner being set up taut. See also rigging.
