This chapter narrates the events following the death of René Guénoun, particularly the problem that was faced concerning his burial as well as the death of the author's mother. The term of the lease for the little plot where René was buried was five years. At the end of the five years, the author's family was informed that the body would be buried into a common grave. In the same year, the author's mother died. Because she was an atheist, his mother ordered the author not to set any ceremony for her death. She was buried at Saint-Julien, a village graveyard, with a few trees and some paths, quiet and shady. His father's remains were later transferred to the same cemetery.
