A hormone is classically considered to be a bioactive molecule that is transported via the circulation from its site of synthesis to its site of action elsewhere in the body, where it exerts its effects on specific target cells through receptor-mediated mechanisms. According to this definition, this chapter deals with the hormones produced by the testis tissue, including their synthesis, secretion, transport, mechanisms of action, and physiological functions. The testicular hormones can be classified as steroid hormones, in particular testosterone, and as peptide hormones, namely those of the activin/inhibin family. Both classes of hormones have both paracrine intratesticular and endocrine extragonadal actions, but the latter aspect of their function will be stressed here. Intratesticular functions of these molecules are discussed in Chapter 9.2.2.
