1 A small barrel or cask kept permanently in ships' boats for the stowage of drinking water for use in case of shipwreck. It is synonymous with barrico, which is the older word. It is thought possibly to be the Anglicized version of the Spanish bareca, a small keg, as barrico probably is, too.
2 In the plural, waves breaking over rocks or shoals, and often a useful warning to ships off their course that they are standing into danger.
