Quick Reference

An elliptical galaxy showing some peculiarity in appearance, such as a dust patch with a few blue supergiant stars, filamentary gas with strong optical emission lines, or an uncharacteristic fall-off in light with distance from the centre. For example, M87, the giant elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster, is peculiar because it has a long, narrow jet extending from its nucleus. M32, a dwarf elliptical companion of the Andromeda Galaxy, is classified as peculiar because its outer regions appear to have been removed in gravitational encounters with its massive neighbour. The nearest radio galaxy, Centaurus A, is also an Ep galaxy.
