(b Ottawa, Canada, 18 Nov. 1961)

British dancer and choreographer. He studied at the Royal Ballet School and performed with Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet (1982–88) before moving into contemporary dance and working with choreographers such as Lloyd Newson, Laurie Booth, and Michael Clark. He founded his own company in 1996, developing a fluid, muscular style that has drawn on yoga, martial arts, and classical ballet. His works are abstract, their resonant visual imagery usually created in collaboration with his long-term lighting designer Michael Hulls. These include Critical Mass (mus. Andy Cowton and Richard English, 1998), Sheer (mus. Sarah Sarhandi, 2001), Broken Fall (mus. Barry Adamson, 2003), Push (mus. Cowton, 2005) and Eonnagata (mus. several, 2009), the last three made in collaboration with the ballerina Sylvie Guillem. Maliphant's works are also in the repertories of Lyon Opera Ballet, George Piper Dances, and Batsheva, among others.
