The sister of Mary and Lazarus. From the incident related in Lk. 10: 38–42, she is commonly regarded as typifying the ‘active’ Christian life as contrasted with Mary, who typifies the ‘contemplative’. According to a medieval legend, Martha, Mary (here identified with Mary Magdalene), and Lazarus came to S. France and founded churches at Marseilles and various other places. Feast day in the E., 4 June; in the W., 29 July.
