Quick Reference

A name shared by a number of Tamil bhakti poets. The tradition, however, has come to regard them as a single author, around whom a considerable hagiography has been constructed. Historically, the most important Nakkīrar is the Caṅkam poet credited with the earliest and best-known devotional poem to Murukaṉ, the Tirumurukāṟṟuppaṭai, ‘Guide to Lord Murukaṉ’, included in the Pattuppāṭṭu anthology (c.5th century ce). In the 12th century, along with eight other compositions attributed to Nakkīrar, this poem was included in the eleventh book of the Tirumuṟai collection.
