Any of several varieties of nonexperimental scientific investigation in which the investigator relies on direct or indirect observation of a situation or behavior, for example a natural experiment or an epidemiological study such as a case control or cohort study. There is only observation without intervention, and there is no experiment in which an investigator manipulates or modifies conditions in some way.
