Quick Reference

(d. 117),

Bp. of Sinope in Pontus. A martyr of this name, who was suffocated in a bath, was formerly commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on 14 July. He is confused with ‘St Phocas the Gardener’, who is said to have been martyred in the Diocletianic persecution, and with St Phocas of Antioch. When the various traditions had been fused, the cult of St Phocas became popular, especially among seafarers.
