A registered charity, previously known as the Pre‐School Playgroup Association, which was established in the 1960s as a response to the growth of community and parent‐run groups for children under statutory school age. Parents and employed staff began to establish local committees, known as branches, who then became part of a county, regional, and national structure. National staff and training officers supplied information, support, and training for all volunteers and staff, as well as accreditation of courses, which were delivered at further education colleges or on site in the playgroups themselves. There now exists a national centre which supports regional offices and 400 local branches of volunteers who shape the direction of the charity. Through the Alliance, parents and staff in pre‐schools can access a range of training opportunities including National Vocational Qualifications in childcare, training, and support.
