The structure in the ciliary axoneme that links an outer microtubule doublet with the sheath around the central pair of microtubules. Spokes are thought to restrict the sliding of doublets relative to one another. There are human homologues of many spoke proteins identified in Chlamydomonas; several have domains associated with signal transduction.
