Syn: North American tick typhus. A rickettsial infection due to Rickettsia rickettsii, transmitted from dogs, rodents, and other mammals to humans by the bite of an infected tick in which it is maintained by transovarial and transstadial passage. It is not transmissible person to person. It causes fever, a papillomacular rash on the limbs, muscle pains, and malaise and has a case fatality rate of 10% to 25% if untreated.
