Membership society, one of the main period societies based in the UK, established in 1957 to further the study of the period from the 5th to the 16th centuries ad, primarily from the archaeological evidence, and to act as a forum for coordinating the efforts of archaeologists working on medieval matters. Although the primary focus of attention is Britain and Ireland this is set within a broader international perspective. Publications include Medieval Archaeology.
