The first crew to visit the Skylab space station in 1973 discovered unbearable temperatures within because the heat shield had been damaged. Temperatures on the outer surface reached more than 150 °C. Two astronauts had to extend a parasol-like sunshade over the space vehicle to cool it down enough to be habitable.
