Welcome to the Oxford Index, a free search and discovery tool from Oxford University Press. The Index is designed to help you begin your research journey by providing a single, convenient search portal for trusted scholarship from Oxford and our partners, and then point you to the most relevant related materials – from journal articles to scholarly monographs. One search brings together top quality content and unlocks connections in a way not previously possible.
What’s Inside?
The Oxford Index contains a cross-searchable set of nearly one million “index cards,” each representing a single article, chapter, journal, or book. Index pages display key information (including abstracts and keywords) about an item, helping you to judge the relevance of that content to your research.
The Oxford Index Beta currently includes indexing of:
- University Press Scholarship Online (including Oxford Scholarship Online) - a collection of more than 9,000 academic monographs from leading university presses worldwide
- Oxford Handbooks Online - 3,400 articles from more than 100 research guides
- Oxford Journals content dating back to 1996 - over 400,000 scholarly articles
- British Academy Publications Online - 100 titles in the humanities and social sciences
- Oxford Islamic Studies Online - over 7,500 biographies, primary source documents, and chaptered works and two versions of the Qur'an
- Oxford Biblical Studies Online - 6,000 A-Z articles in addition to six Bible texts, concordances, and more
- Oxford Art Online, including Grove Art Online (nearly 45,000 biographies and signed entries) and the Benezit Dictionary of Artists (over 200,000 artist biographies)
- Oxford Music Online, including Grove Music Online (65,000 biographies and signed entries)
- American National Biography Online - over 18,000 biographies of men and women whose lives have shaped the American story
- Oxford Dictionary of National Biography - nearly 60,000 biographies of those who influenced British history
- Who's Who and Who Was Who - autobiographical entries for more than 130,000 persons noteworthy and influential in every area of public life
- Oxford Bibliographies - exclusive, authoritative research guides across 30 different subject areas and counting
- Oxford Medicine Online - an interconnected collection of over 250 online medical resources which cover every stage in a medical career
- Oxford Reference - draws from 125 core academic dictionaries and over 180 award-winning Companions and Encyclopedias. Responsible for all content within the Oxford Index's thousands of Overview Pages
About the Beta
Developed in partnership with the academic and librarian community, the Oxford Index will continue to evolve as we build new functionality, increase linking, and add new content to enhance the user experience. Each release will see the addition of hundreds of thousands of new 'index cards' and further enhancements to site features.
New functionality includes:
- Index integration into Oxford products with the Oxford Index underbar, a tool that generates related links from across Oxford's online resources, allowing users to search the breadth of the Index directly from within Oxford Scholarly Editions Online, Oxford Journals,Oxford Handbooks Online, and more
- Thousands of trusted Overview Pages that offer at-a-glance descriptions on a range of topics, from "globalization" to "chorizo"
- COMING SOON: Additional metadata from acclaimed Oxford University Press law online products such as Oxford Reports on International Law
