This is a translation of part of the section of Gyōnen's Jōdo Hōmon Genrushō on the ecclesiastical history of the Pure Land school of Buddhism in Japan, which has been divided into five chapters (Chs. 4–8 of the translation). This chapter describes the tradition from its initial transmission from India up to, and including, Hōnen. Extensive footnotes are included.
