This chapter focuses on Anthony, the putative founder of Christian monasticism, and the centrality of Matthew 19:16-22 in Anthony’s life and the subsequent monastic movement. It traces the origins of monasticism, the role of Scripture in the desert, responses by Protestants to ascetic disciplines, and concludes with a discussion of contemporary expressions of Christian spirituality.
