Examines both the scope and the bindingness of the duty imposed by the love commandment – the unconditional obligation is to exclude no one. It examines the role and rationale of proper self‐love, as contrasted with selfish self‐love. Since the need to love and the need to be loved are part of human nature, the commandment guides our love; the relevance of human need distinguishes this ethic from a divine command ethic.
