Love is a gift to others, as well as a debt to them. Love is giving, rather than an exchange, and it is a giving that hides itself in sensitivity to the other's feelings. Love helps the other to stand by him/herself. Self‐denial is entailed in any attempt to love the other's distinctiveness, to avoid molding or domineering the other. The relevance of the gratitude or ingratitude of the recipient is examined. This analysis is relevant to contemporary discussions of a work “without return” (Levinas) and gift as “the impossible” (Derrida).
