Johannes Bugenhagen was the pastor of the City Church in Wittenberg, close associate in reform to Martin Luther, translator of the Bible into Low German, and architect of church order for several cities and territories in North Germany and Denmark. He became the leading theoretician of ecclesiastical life for the Lutherans, as Bucer and Calvin were for the Reformed.
