This paper deals with the interpretation of the Mechanics chapter of Kant’s Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science (1786). It is aimed at clarifying the procedure Kant invokes for the transcendental determination of the quantity of matter in mechanical respect. Kant’s intention is to ground mass measurement on the moving force that matter possesses by virtue of its motion, and that moving bodies display by setting other bodies in motion. An important issue in this context concerns the role of gravitation as compared to mechanical processes in the narrow sense of “pressure and impact”.
