The Book of Mormon arrived on an American landscape where speculation about Native American origins was rife, and included theories of an Israelite connection. With the discovery of the Mayan ruins of Mesoamerica, Mormons labored to amass archeological support for the scripture's historical authenticity. Under the influence of B. H. Roberts, Mormons were alerted to serious inadequacies in the Mormon case. In spite of concerted archaeological efforts after World War II, defenders of the Book of Mormon found little useful evidence.
