This chapter examines social capital changes in France. The simultaneous growth of inner-oriented, self-centred primary group social capital and reduction of other-oriented bridging and institutionally linked social capital are observed. Received social capital is becoming irrelevant to citizens’ emerging demands, attitudes, mores, and capabilities. Civil society is undergoing a process of emancipation from the state.
