The temple played a pivotal role in fostering Orthodox identity in late imperial rural Russia. It had three overarching functions. First as an “official” sacerdotal structure that impressed meaning on a locality through its presence. Second, it served as a narrative repository for both personal and shared religious experiences of lay persons. Third, it was an enduring forum for relational dialectics with respect to both the internal life of the faith community and the world outside it.
