Local feasts were a deeply rooted feature of Russian Orthodoxy. These not only displayed the characteristics of classical Christian worship, but integrated universally recognized traits of Orthodox worship into the fabric of village life. Such feasts grounded the Orthodox calendar in that feasts which bore witness to biblical events, saints, or icons of universal or national significance mixed with feasts that testified to similar though more immediate events.
