Specially revered icons were a prominent feature of late imperial Russian Orthodoxy. These came to represent the challenges to traditional authority structures that modernisation often entailed. Since these icons often originated with the experiences of lay men and women from all social backgrounds, they gave lay people an independent means to exercise their spiritual discernment and express their involvement in the unfolding of sacred history.
