Marian icons and their related stories reflect Mary’s role in the ecclesial world of late imperial Russian Orthodoxy. This chapter examines the image of Mary as a symbol of collective Orthodox experience that emerges from devotional literature. It describes the special relationship between Mary and her icon, and the way icon stories portray Mary making use of her own image. It then analyses the values and sentiments that the icon of Mary encouraged with respect to the issues of religious authority, the community, and the individual.
