This chapter discusses the development of archaeological explorations of Palestine. The first systematic exploration of Palestine resulted from the combined efforts of two Americans, Edward Robinson and Eli Smith, in the 1800s. As interest in Palestine grew, the Palestine Exploration Fund and Palestine Exploration Society, and Society of Biblical Archaeology were established. The late 19th century saw the change from treasure hunting to true scientific inquiry in Palestinian archaeology.
