The figure of Abraham played an important role in Israelite culture: as the apex of the tribal genealogy, as a religious and cultural founder, and as a moral exemplar. This chapter examines these functions of Abraham in biblical memory, and how the figure of Abraham is sometimes mobilized to advocate differing social and religious claims.
