This chapter describes the current cultural context, both secular and Catholic, in which Catholic colleges and universities operate. It establishes the claims of these institutions their Catholic identity and mission distinguishes them within the landscape of American higher education. The data from the first phase of a national study of Catholic higher education that led to the more extensive second phase are analyzed. The design and methodology of both the first and second phases of the study are also discussed.
