The chapter explores the fact that although Dōgen’s most well known version of the Shōbōgenzō has 95 fascicles, he composed several more versions that revealed additional information about the Master. As abbot of Eiheiji, Dōgen focused his attention on delivering the jōdō sermons in the Eihei kōroku, a crucial text which, until very recently, has been so overshadowed by the 75-Shōbōgenzō that it was virtually neglected in Western scholarship. Two other collections that are crucial for understanding the unfolding of Dōgen’s career in relation to Chinese Ch’an are the Shōbōgenzō zuimonki and the Eihei shingi. The chapter concludes with a discussion of Dōgen’s life through the Decline and Renewal theories.
