In the latter part of the 16th century, Jesuit missionaries evangelized Julí, a town near Lake Titikaka in the Andes Mountains. The evangelizers created here in the 16th century what was to become the model for the later Reductions of Paraguay. The Doctrina Cristiana, Isolation and Indoctrination marked the Jesuit Christianizing effort in Peru. The Aymara, or Native Americans of the region, became Christians but many retained the Old Religion as well.
