In this chapter, the first four (extant) books of Iamblichus's work On Pythagoreanism are examined as relating to a unitary scheme. Iamblichus's interpretation of the role of Pythagoras in the revelation of philosophy, of the nature of Pythagorean philosophy, and of the place and nature of mathematics and of arithmetic in that philosophy are described.
