The connections between Iamblichus's school in Syria and the beginnings of the Neoplatonist school in Athens are indicated, and, as a first case of the influence of Iamblichus's Pythagoreanizing programme, the works of Hierocles of Alexandria (a pupil of Plutarch of Athens) discussed, with reference, in particular, to Hierocles's views on the history of philosophy and his use of Pythagoreanism in his commentary on the Golden Verses.
