Presents and defends the thesis that in his Cogito‐related pursuit of security in the Meditations, Descartes is searching not only for (1) certainty, understood normatively but also, and perhaps dominantly, for (2) stability of beliefs, understood psychologically. Much of what is most problematic in the work makes better sense related to 2 than related to 1.
