In spite of its importance on the present scene of biblical study, it is far from clear what ‘ideology’ actually is. The term is often used pejoratively; but it is also possible to praise it and regard ideology as not only inevitable but also desirable. Moreover, are the thoughts of the biblical writers themselves ideology? Examples of contrary views are surveyed.
