An analysis of the use of rare, obscure, and technical terms as a translation feature in the Old Latin Gospels. It is suggested that these forms need not be ’archaisms’ or ’vulgarisms’ (as is often suggested); the use of inappropriately precise and technical terms is a wider feature of translationese in general, and Biblical translation in particular.

Keywords: archaisms; Old Latin; rare words; technical terms; translationese; vulgarisms
