Some have argued that changing electioneering styles are contributing to the obsolescence of membership‐based parties. In recent years, political parties in Germany and Britain have indeed moved towards more centralized and media‐based campaigning, but they have found other campaign tasks for members at the local level. The German parties, in particular, have come to appreciate the outreach members can provide as ‘ambassadors to the community’.
