The chapter begins by discussing the myth and reality of the so‐called ’three pillars’ of the Japanese internal labour system ‐ lifetime employment, the seniority system, and enterprise unionism. It then discusses the system in detail from three aspects: employment adjustment, skill formation through off‐the‐job and on‐the‐job training, and the promotion tournament as a mechanism of internal competition. This system, it is argued, contributes to flexibility in human management and worker motivation.
