This chapter examines whether there are economics of growth and size to be had from the expansion of firms, within the context of the efficient utilisation of the resources of society. It is shown that the growth of firms may be consistent with the efficient use of society’s resources. The result of past growth — the size attained at any time — may have no corresponding advantages.
