Firms may obtain the assurance of appropriate complementary investments merely because continuity in firms’ activities favours predictability, or they may make contractual arrangements with other firms, or they may resort to vertical integration. The coordination of complementary investments over an extended area, so as to obtain balanced growth, may be sought through planning.
