Chapter 1 sets the stage by reviewing the evidence on output, employment, productivity, unemployment, and investment for five Central European countries – the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Bulgaria. I focus on these countries simply because I know them better. But, while the primary focus of this book is indeed on Central Europe, I shall, as I go along, try to explain differences between Central and Eastern Europe and – more tentatively, because I know so little – between Central Europe and China.

Keywords: Central Europe; central planning; China; distortion; employment; investment; market economy; output; productivity; transition
