 A Typology of Orientations

If the analogy between internationalized governance and domestic national governance is valid, there should be some parallels between the types or dimensions of orientations of public opinion at the international and national level. Accordingly, this chapter approaches the task of developing a typology of orientations towards internationalized governance by way of a critical review of the two main classifications of the dimensions of orientations towards political systems – that of ‘civic culture’ formulated by Almond and Verbena, and that of systems analysis developed by Easton. The chapter then extends this review to examine a third classification, which deals specifically with orientations towards the European Community.
