The first chapter studies a relatively ‘Western’ country, the Czech Republic during the early‐ and mid‐1990s. Over a four‐year period there is clear evidence of class‐based political polarization along the ‘classic’ left‐right axis. The differential costs and benefits of marketization would appear to have become increasingly apparent to classes within the Czech electorate.
