Transaction cost economics (TCE) has been criticized by management scholars and knowledge-based theorists, using their critiques of TCE as the starting point for their own approaches to the firm. It is argued that TCE has the potential to add to the very core of strategic management research — value creation and appropriation. This chapter also draws on the economics for property rights to link the discussion to the resource-based view and knowledge-based view.
