Using internal evidence from fourth‐century letter collections, this chapter explores the norms of composition for letters, the mechanics of delivery of letters, and their part in a wider nexus of communication. This nexus includes gift giving, exchange of books, and the verbal reports of letter carriers. The role of the letter carriers is shown to be particularly important.
