This chapter examines the impact of demographic changes on poverty levels in Brazil. Demographic transition had an impact on poverty close to 15% of the corresponding impact of economic growth. Despite regional differences in the timing and speed of demographic change, these accounted for just a small fraction of regional differences in poverty. When families were ranked by their average income per adult, the demographic differences between poor and rich families were small.
